The vet gave my cat a 4-inch hard plastic collar to stop his scratching. He drove him nuts and didn't help much as he could reach around it to lick and had him hitting the collar edge on furniture and doorjambs. I ordered the 5 1/2 inch so it would be big enough that he couldn't reach around and that worked.This one doesn't seem to bother him, it can lie flat on his back and he can sleep comfortably. The material can be torn by cat nails and my cat has managed to shove his paw through the neck opening(!), probably because it's difficult to pull the drawstring ties tight enough on his neck. Big improvement over hard plastic.
